Chazz Palminteri Talks New Play ‘Unorganized Crime,’ Getting His Start from Robert DeNiro (Q&A)

The actor dishes on the new play from Kenny D'Aquila, why cancer was the best thing that ever happened to him, and the time he witnessed a murder.

About two years ago, Chazz Palminteriwas given a script by Kenny D’Aquila, a working actor who hit his peak as a day player on TV shows in the '80s. D’Aquila reminded Palminteri of himself about twenty-five years ago when he had a similar list of credits to his name. Back then, Palminteri was pushing forty and found himself running out of options so he sat down and wrote a one-man show called A Bronx Tale. When Robert DeNiro turned it into a movie, it launched Palminteri’s career.

Chazz Palminteri - LA TimesCurtain Call: Chazz Palminteri Pays it Forward with Unorganized Crime

By Craig Byrd

Kenny D’Aquila was smart when he was putting together the debut production of his play Unorganized Crime. He brought in fellow playwright and actor, Chazz Palminteri, to play one of the lead roles and produce the show.  Palminteri’s one-man play A Bronx Tale, which premiered in Los Angeles in 1990, was subsequently made into a feature film by Robert De Niro. Will lightning strike twice.

“After I opened my play, it just took over Hollywood and became a phenomenon,” says Palminteri the morning after Unorganized Crime’s opening night. “I don’t know if this one will be like that. It would be pretty amazing if it did. We just did opening night yesterday and the reaction was incredible.”

Chazz Palminteri - LA TimesChazz Palminteri to star in 'Unorganized Crime' in Los Angeles

By David Ng

In 1989, actor Chazz Palminteri debuted his one-man show "A Bronx Tale" at a small theater on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. The modest play would later catch the attention of Robert De Niro, who turned it into a movie, which in turn helped to propel Palminteri's screen career.

In May, Palminteri is set to debut a new play at another small theater in L.A. "Unorganized Crime," written by Kenny D'Aquila, will open at the Elephant Theatre in Hollywood's Theatre Row on May 1 for a three-week run through May 25. Preview performances are scheduled to begin April 26.

"Unorganized Crime," which will be directed by David Fofi, tells the story of Gino (D'Aquila), a New York mafioso who has been banished to Detroit.  Palminteri will play Gino's brother Sal, a menacing mobster who turns up one day at Gino's doorstep.

Last year, Palminteri and others launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise  $65,000 for the play. But the campaign failed to meet its goal.

A spokesman for the production said that producer Dave Finkelstein, who initially contributed to the campaign, decided to fund the entire L.A. production after the Kickstarter effort fell short.

Finkelstein is listed as an executive producer of the show, and Palminteri and Josh Silver are credited as producers.

Palminteri was nominated for an Academy Award in 1995 for his supporting role in Woody Allen's "Bullets Over Broadway." The actor performed "A Bronx Tale" in New York prior to its becoming a movie. In 2007, he brought the play to Broadway and took it on a national tour.

REVIEWS Unorganized Crime

"Kenny D'Aquila's world premiere one-act play Unorganized Crime is about a contemporary New York family of gangsters a la Mario Puzo's The Godfather, except it limits itself to crime within the family ranks as opposed to outside connections. With a superb cast and direction, what could come off as mere grit or glorification of violence has an undeniable sense of humor that sets it apart, now at the Elephant Theatre in Hollywood through the end of this month."  READ MORE

"D’Aquila has fashioned a superb role for himself, and manages to walk a tightrope between eliciting empathy and contemptibility for his wayward family black sheep. Rodriguez is a force of nature as the ball-busting spouse who is pitiable one moment, and suspicious the next."

"Kenny D’Aquila’s world premiere 'Unorganized Crime' receives a sturdy mounting at the Elephant Theatre with a very strong cast; sharp, quick-paced directing; and a clever, credible script."

"Unorganized Crime is a great ride that ramps up the tension then hurtles us through one plot twist and razor-sharp line after the other. Critically acclaimed actors CHAZZ PALMINTERI and ELIZABETH RODRIGUEZ head a very strong cast that delivers 70 minutes of noir heaven."

"Unorganized Crime is the kind of dark play that American audiences love. They eat up every foul word or phrase, every rough act of violence, particularly when it mixes with sex. We're not known world-wide for our violent tastes in movies for nothing. If you loved The Sopranos and other shows about mafia families, this one's for you. For those more timid souls...well, on the plus side, it's beautifully directed, acted, and even D'Aquila's script has some very enjoyably comedic moments."

This Compelling mob tale starring Chazz Palminteri is like Greek Tragedy reimagined through a modern lens."

"The quirky, colorfully written tragicomedy exploits the same dynamics — the soapy interpersonal problems of cold-blooded killers — that made the HBO series (Sopranos) such a guilty thrill… charged by the performances of Chazz Palminteri (A BRONX TALE) and Elizabeth Rodriguez (MOTHERFUCKER WITH A HAT)"

"Oscar nominee Chazz Palminteri and Tony nominee Elizabeth Rodriguez bring their Hollywood/Broadway talent/star power to Kenny D’Aquila’s savagely funny goodfellas comedy Unorganized Crime, now getting its World Premiere at Hollywood’s Lillian Theatre under David Fofi’s razor-sharp direction."
